With more than 50 years of experience in the trade, Bemo Rail is specialised in making all types of rail welds. Our welding experts can advise you which type of weld is most suitable for your project. Besides welding, we can also supply fasteners and/or take care of the installation of rail constructions.

In order to guarantee quality, Bemo Rail’s welding procedures are certified according to ISO 3834-2. Together with our certified employees this ensures the highest possible quality in our sector. Bemo Rail provides 3 types of rail welding:

  • Flash butt welding
  • Thermite welding

Flash butt welding

This welding method offers you as a customer great advantages in terms of quality, lead time and reliability.

Quality: highest possible quality weld, without using filler materials. This weld is certified in accordance with EN14587-2. This welding method has excellent mechanical properties in terms of elongation, tension and fatigue.

Throughput time: with the possibility of making 30 welds a day, an optimisation of the throughput time can be achieved. This welding method is therefore also very suitable for large projects, work in standstill, work at height or lead time reduction.

  • 100% result (no weld added material)
  • Economical for large numbers of rail joints
  • Suitable for both ground and crane tracks at height
  • No NDT required, 100% connection guaranteed

Reliability: More than 30 million welds have been produced worldwide using a machine from the same manufacturer. A great deal of research has been carried out into this welding method, which has shown that the risk of breakage is nil.

Rail profiles: The machine can weld a wide range of rail profiles, such as low crane rail, high crane rail, vignola or groove rail. The profiles to be welded vary in weight from 49 kg/m1 (S49) and 150 kg/m1 (A150).


Puddle Arc welding

In puddle arc welding, the rail is welded using copper blocks and welding electrodes. The weld pool is held together by the copper blocks to create a fully welded joint. After cooling, the rail head is ground into shape.

Bemo Rail has years of experience with puddle arc welding. Because of our experienced specialists we can guarantee the desired quality. We prefer to use a puddle arc weld, because of the higher toughness in case of deflection at the weld (see video fracture test) and because of a safer execution of work.

Thermite welding

In thermite welding, the rail is placed between ceramic moulds and preheated to very high temperatures. Once the rail has reached the correct temperature, a liquid will flow into the moulds, which will bond the rail. Then the rail head is ground into shape. This weld is very suitable for rails on sleepers.

Characteristics Thermite welds

  • Good planability
  • 100% result, visual and NDT examination recommended
  • Not suitable for crane tracks at height, due to safety issues (due to heat liquid)
  • The thermite weld is particularly suitable for rail applications
  • Less suitable for crane track constructions with a high dynamic load
